Senior Director, Medical Affairs Strategy & Excellence
San Mateo, CA, US
Dompé is an Italian bio-pharmaceutical company that focuses on innovation, where a long tradition in the field of personal wellness goes hand-in-hand with a commitment to research and development to meet unsatisfied therapeutic needs.
Established in 1940 in Milan, Dompé has an industrial and biotech research hub in L’Aquila, in addition to branches in Europe (Barcelona, Berlin, Paris and Tirana). The company has approximately 900 employees. The US headquarters of Dompé are based in Boston (R&D) and in the San Francisco Bay Area (Commercial Operations).
The Senior Director, Medical Affairs Strategy & Excellence leads the strategic engagement and organizational capability agenda that allows Dompé's Medical Affairs organization to engage the external scientific community with consistency, credibility, and impact across a growing indication portfolio. This individual owns the design and evolution of Dompé's congress strategy, KOL and advisory board engagement strategy, and the mechanisms by which field and advisory insight are translated into organizational action. In addition, this role will ensure that the broader Medical Affairs organization has the training, competency frameworks, and operational infrastructure to execute that strategy well. This role will report to the Executive Director, Global Medical Affairs Center of Excellence.
Job Description:
KOL Engagement Strategy
• Set enterprise KOL engagement strategy, including the framework for KOL identification, mapping, and multi-year engagement planning across indications
• Lead KOL mapping, segmentation and tiering with matching engagement intensity to scientific influence and strategic relevance with heavy collaboration with Field Medical Affairs Leadership
• Set the strategy for identifying and prioritizing key institutions, academic medical centers, high-volume treatment sites, and research networks, alongside individual KOL mapping, so institutional relationships are built deliberately rather than following individual advisor moves
• Support advisory board strategy end to end, including the continued evolution of the Longitudinal Steering Committee model into a durable, scalable engagement structure
Congress & Scientific Exchange Strategy
• Own Dompé's enterprise congress strategy across indications determining which congresses warrant investment, what presence looks like at each, and how congress activity ties to portfolio priorities
• Direct R&D logistics planning for congress engagement, partnering with field, events, and CoE functions to ensure execution is seamless, timely, and compliant
• Set the annual scientific exchange and engagement calendar in partnership with Global Medical Leads, aligning advisory boards, congress activity, and field engagement to a single portfolio-level view
Insight-to-Action
• Own the strategy and governance for how insight captured from MSLs, advisory boards, and scientific exchange is synthesized and translated into action for GMLs and CoE leadership
• Set priorities and reporting frameworks for the Medical Intelligence & Insights function, ensuring field and advisory feedback measurably shapes organizational decisions
• Represent the voice of the field and the external scientific community in Medical Affairs strategic planning and governance forums
IIR & IME Governance
• Serve as the senior Medical Affairs representative on the Investigator-Initiated Research Committee (IIRC) and the Independent Medical Education (IME) Committee, providing strategic and scientific oversight of both review processes
• Own committee performance reporting and KPI tracking for IIR and IME programs including review cycle time, study/grant pipeline, and budget utilization
• Partner with Legal, Compliance, and Clinical Development to resolve escalations, policy questions, or edge cases arising from IIR or IME reviews
Cross-Functional Leadership & Governance
• Serve as the senior Medical Affairs partner to Commercial, Clinical Development, and Regulatory Affairs on matters of congress strategy, KOL engagement, and advisory governance, ensuring Medical Affairs' independent scientific perspective is represented clearly
• Contribute to Medical Affairs strategic planning and governance as a member of the Center of Excellence leadership team
Qualifications:
Required
• Advanced degree in life sciences, pharmacy, or medicine (PharmD, PhD, MD, or equivalent)
• 10+ years of progressive medical affairs experience, including field medical, medical strategy, or KOL/advisory engagement roles
• Demonstrated experience designing and executing congress strategy and advisory board or steering committee structures
• Experience managing people managers or senior individual contributors, with a track record of developing talent
• Deep understanding of compliance requirements governing HCP/KOL interactions
Preferred
• Experience operating across multiple indications or therapeutic areas simultaneously
• Experience in ophthalmology, rare disease, or neurology
• Experience building or evolving a standing advisory or steering committee model
• Experience partnering with Commercial on cross-functional engagement governance
Competencies:
• Strategic systems thinking: connects congress, KOL, advisory, and insight strategies into one coherent engagement model rather than managing them as separate workstreams
• External engagement mastery: deep fluency in how KOLs, OLIs, and advisory boards are identified, engaged, and sustained over time
• People leadership: builds and develops a team of Associate Directors, delegating with clarity and holding a high bar for both strategic and operational execution
• Insight-to-action discipline: ensures field and advisory feedback translates into decisions, not just reports
• Cross-functional influence without authority: builds trust with Commercial, Clinical Development, and Regulatory Affairs while protecting Medical Affairs' independent scientific voice
